Recently we had the pleasure of sitting down with British DJ & Producer Tom Staar. He spoke to us about his background in the industry, favourite shows/festivals to play & offered some exclusive info into what’s in store for him in 2019!

Hey Tom, how are you? Firstly could you provide our readers with a little background on yourself and how you got started in music?

“I am Tom Staar, a record producer and DJ from the UK currently living in Ibiza. I’ve been producing since 2000 under different guises and also as a gun for hire in the studio, working with many other artists in the background as an engineer, co-writer & producer.”

You’ve always been so consistent with putting out quality music and reworks on a regular basis, which is something a lot of up and coming producers can struggle with. What do you feel is the secret to this?

“The key for me is to be working on lots of different things at the same time, switching between projects, it gives me perspective rather than getting stuck on one idea for ages. Stepping away from a track for a while can work wonders for direction and also spot mix problems.”

Can you tell us a little about your recent collaboration with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano and how the idea for “Bombs Away” came to fruition?

Sunnery and Ryan play pretty much everything I do, they are really big supporters of my Tom Staar sound. We spoke about doing something together a few years back but with their schedule and mine its been hard getting round to it. I played for them in Ibiza over the summer at their party at Hi and finally got on to making the record. We wanted to do something that was housey but still playable on the big stages that we do over the summer festival season.”

When you’re in the studio, what are you some of your go-to tools for workflow and completing projects? Do you have a favourite set of plugins of samples?

XFER LFO tool is one of my most used plugins, getting the right pump and groove is so important to my sound, and the versatility of it makes it a permanent tool in the studio for me”

You’ve played in venues and festivals across the world, have you had any stand out favourites along the way, and what makes these so special?

“Ah, that’s one I always get asked but its so hard to choose. I’ve been lucky enough to do some amazing festivals and parties over the years. Exit festival in Serbia was def one of my faves, I did it back in 2013. Tomorrowland is always a highlight of the summer for me too, I’ve played it that last 5 years now.”

Finally, What’s in store for 2019?

“2019 is already shaping up to be a big one for me. I have a big Ibiza residency confirmed for the summer already, and some huge collabs with David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren and Steve Angello on the way. I also have a new project away from Tom Staar that I’ve been working on ready to go too, so it’s looking good!”
