This week on the Journal we sat down with 21 year old French electronic music DJ and producer, Matt Fax. Known for his endevaours in the Progressive House scene, he’s already released his debut album in Autumn 2017. We talked about his aspirations, working on music and career highlights so far.
It’s not widely known that you have been involved in the music industry for numerous years despite your young age. What made you decide to pursue a career in the music industry, especially as a producer and DJ?
“I always loved music since I’ve been very young. When I first started, it was more like a hobby. I would come back from school and started creating. When I was 16, I dropped out of school to make music full time, as I clearly wanted to make a living out of it. Producers and DJs started to support my tracks, then I started playing some gigs and every time something would happen it would enforce the idea to continue no matter what. Music makes me feel alive.”
You recently released your debut studio album ‘Contrast’ on Enhanced Music’s sub imprint Colorize, how long did it take for your to produce the album and what was the attraction of working with Enhanced?
“I first started working on an album in 2013, with the intention to keep it if a label decided to contact me. However each year I’d trash everything and start again from 0, until Enhanced came along and told me they wanted to work with me on a new project. They helped me to define my sound, to make it sound better and they totally gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted. I presented them over 20 tracks and we selected 13 of them.”
If you could give any upcoming artists one piece of advice, what would it be?
“Don’t stop working, don’t stop believing in your dreams and don’t do this for the money or fame. Put your soul in your records, and if someone tries to tell you that you’re wasting your time making ‘noise’, just ignore them. Don’t expect to blow up in a few months, it will take years or even decades.”
What achievement of yours are you most proud of?
“Being invited by Armin van Buuren to his ASOT Studio last October. I played a 20min guest mix and did a quick interview, it was super cool. I still can’t believe it happened , but pictures and videos are here to remind me this was real.”
What can we expect from Matt Fax in 2018?
“There’s a lot of new music planned, in different styles. I’ll try to release less music but only the best of what I can come up with. I’m still working closely with Enhanced for a couple of releases, and I might start to dive into album 2 during the year.”
