In our latest edition of The Journal, we sat down with rising star, DJ and producer Mike Hawkins. We discussed his favourite gear, why he decided to launch his own label and much more.
When did you realise that music was a passion of yours and why did you decide to become a producer?
“It started early, I grew up with music and came from a very musical family. I’ve been lucky to have music around me for most of my life. When I was 11 or so I downloaded an early copy of Soundforge and began making mashups and the rest is history.”
Can you describe the Mike Hawkin’s sound in 5 words?
“Eclectic, powerful, beat-driven, interesting and big.”
Inside the past 12 months you have a set up your own label Vaypor, in collaboration with Armada Music. What made you decide to set up your own record label and work in collaboration with Armada?
“I needed a place to just put out the music I felt like putting out at the time, the past year has been really experimental for me and spanning a big range of genres. Armada understood the idea and we launched Vaypor together to have a home for the more eclectic, left of center records.”
What pieces of music studio gear could you not do without?
“My newly purchased UA gear has been a fantastic addition to my setup! I’ve always been sceptical, but I have to admit the Universal Audio stuff sounds pretty damn good.”
What can we expect from Mike Hawkins in 2018?
“A shit-ton of club music!”
